Award-winning New Zealand author Kate de Goldi has imbued her latest book with all the wisdom, humour and family chaos you could wish for.The 10pm Question is a novel that challenges any kind of age category and will appeal to pre-teen, teen and adult readers alike.

Frankie Parsons is twelve going on old man, an apparently sensible, talented boy with a drumbeat of worrying questions steadily gaining volume in his head Are the smoke alarm batteries flat? Does the cat, and therefore the rest of the family, have worms? Will bird flu strike and ruin life as we know it? Is the Kidney-shaped spot on his chest actually a galloping cancer? Only Ma takes seriously his catalogue of persistent queries. But it is Ma who is the cause of the most worrying question of all, the one that Frankie can never bring himself to ask. Then the new girl arrives at school and has questions of her own relentless, unavoidable questions. So begins the unravelling of Frankie Parsons' carefully controlled world.

The 10pm Question (Audible Audio Edition) Kate de Goldi Stig Wemyss Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Books Reviews

I love love loved this book. Frankie is such an awesome narrator. He is young, which usually loses my interest, but incredibly clever and real. Being a worrier myself, I totally found myself rooting for him and hoping he would find a way to deal. The lists that he makes to calm himself down are something I can relate to as well. My lists aren't mental like his, but I do compulsively keep track of certain things (mostly to do with reading). I also sometimes write lists just for the sheer pleasure and soothingness of creating them.

Frankie is not the only character who is well-drawn. The whole cast feels completely real and full of life, from the big fat aunts to the dad called Uncle George by everyone (even though he's not an uncle) to the family cat (The Fat Controller) to the teacher at Frankie's school. Everyone has there own crazy quirks and I could connect with them all.

Part of the reason the story is so successful, despite having a rather contemplative plot, is the focus on the relationships between family and friends. De Goldi has captured how a family can be full of love and still be dysfunctional. While the story does have a bit of an overarching plot, it's not really what you think it is at the beginning and the resolution isn't momentous. This is a story of Frankie's personal journey to learn to understand himself and his family.

Everyone should read this. It is absolutely delightful! Fans of A Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time should definitely check this out.
The 10 PM Question features 12-year-old Frankie Parsons. Each night he lies awake in bed, worrying. By 10 p.m., he's usually searched out his mom to ply her for answers or to simply receive some comfort.

But other then having an overactive worrying imagination, he's a perfectly normal kid. He and his best friend Gigs have a made-up language and made-up games that, along with time, has cemented their friendship. He's waiting for the switch to turn on that will make girls interesting and attractive, and that might be happening when free-spirit Sydney moves to his class and they are partnered up on a project.

No one really talks about Ma -- not his siblings, not Uncle George (who is really his father with just an odd name that has stuck), but Frankie worries about her too. He worries why she doesn't leave the house, and begins to wonder if he might end up like her. But Sydney asks a lot of questions. At first he does everything he can to avoid them, but in the end letting himself get to know her and be known by her, helps him to figure himself out a little bit more.

I can't put my finger on why exactly, but this book feels firmly like a book for middle schoolers and above. It doesn't have a lot of swearing or any activities that would worry the parent of a child younger than 13, but there are some mature themes mentioned. I love that there is a true coning-of-age YA book that should appeal to ages 13 and up out there that isn't full of explicit language and sex.

It's also one sure to appeal to adults who are fans of the coming-of-age tale (like me!). I like that it has a boy protagonist, but because the emotional quotient is very high it will also appeal to girls (and of course he has a girl best friend/perhaps more than a friend).

And if you like quirky -- this one has just enough to keep you smiling, though not enough to annoy you if you don't like quirky (although if that's your opinion, I strongly feel you are missing out). A father called Uncle George? A cat named the Fat Controller? A made-up language? It's all there.

AUDIOBOOK NOTES The accented reader Stig Wemyss added to that element of place (New Zealand) that resonated loudly with this American listener.
This is a wonderful story of a loving, but dysfunctional family. The main character's adolescent struggles are realistic as is the depiction of his struggles to overcome his obsessive nature. In turns funny and sad, the story moves forward and draws the reader into the family's attempts to adjust to the mother's agoraphobia. The author has done a great job of making this a compelling, readable, and heart-warming story.
A delight of a novel. Funny, wry, acutely observed picture of family life through the eyes of a young teenager. Highly recommended.
Deserves the acclaim it has received - beautifully executed .
The book worked for me on many levels... told a story of maturity - coming of age, both the changing nature and durability of family relations and friendship. The lessons of being open to diverse points of view. Love. Acceptance of imperfection. Will read it again to get the nuances of each thread that I may have missed... Loved it.
It WS a slow book. The book was good at describing but left some bits out. Over all it was OK.
